Discrete Summation

These theories introduce basic concepts and proofs about discrete summation: shifts, formal summation, falling factorials and stirling numbers. As proof of concept, a simple summation conversion is provided. 1 Stirling numbers of first and second kind theory Stirling imports Main begin 1.1 Stirling numbers of the second kind fun Stirling :: nat ⇒ nat ⇒ nat where Stirling 0 0 = 1 | Stirling 0 (S...

Gosper’s Algorithm and Accurate Summation as Definite Summation Tools

Sufficient conditions are given for validity of the discrete Newton-Leibniz formula when the indefinite sum is obtained either by Gosper’s algorithm or by Accurate Summation algorithm. It is shown that sometimes a polynomial can be factored from the summand in such a way that the safe summation range is inreased.

Vibrotactile temporal summation: probability summation or neural integration?

Temporal summation, a decrease in the detection threshold that occurs when either the duration of a stimulus or the number of stimuli in a sequence is increased, has been attributed to the operations of either the mechanism of neural integration or of probability summation. Our experiments indicate that under certain conditions, both mechanisms may operate, but that the process of neural integr...

Boundary Summation Equations

A new solution method for systems of partial difference equations is presented. It can be seen as a discrete counterpart of boundary integral equations, but with sums instead of integrals. The number of unknowns in systems of linear difference equations with constant coefficients defined on uniform d-dimensional grids are reduced so that one dimension is eliminated. The reduction is obtained us...
